Plasma fatty acid levels in autistic children – Vancassel et al.
PLEFA – VOLUME 65, ISSUE 1, P1-7, JULY 01, 2001; Marked reduction in the levels of Omega 3 fatty acids (23%) in the autistic subjects, resulting in significantly lower levels of total (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (20%),
Omega-3 fatty acids in the management of autism spectrum disorders: findings from an open-label pilot study in Singapore –
European Journal of Clin. Nutrition vol 69, pages 969–971 (2015) ;
A total of 41 kids with autism supplemented with 840 mg of DHA & 192 mg of EPA. At post-treatment, parents reported significant improvements on core symptoms of ASD as assessed by the SRS-Parent: Social Awareness, Social Cognition, Social Communication, Social Motivation & autistic Mannerisms.
Reduced levels of plasma polyunsaturated fatty acids and serum carnitine in autistic children: relation to gastrointestinal manifestations – Mostafa et al, volume 4, 2015;
Reduced levels of serum carnitine and plasma DHA, AA, linolenic and linoleic acids were found in 66%, 62%, 60%, 43% and 38%, respectively of autistic children.
Docosahexaenoic acid supplementation increases prefrontal cortex activation during sustained attention in healthy boys:
a placebo-controlled, F-MRI study – McNamara et al;
Am J Clin Nutr 2010;91:1060–7.
In the 8 week trial with low dose DHA (400 mg/day) & high dose DHA (1200 mg/day), both DHA dose groups had significantly greater changes from baseline in activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex than did the placebo group
